Importance of Tank Testing

Tanks are used in a wide variety of contexts, from a lone water tank on an isolated patch of farmland, to great big tank farms containing hundreds of large tanks in active operation.

Often times the case is between these two extremes of course, but regardless of the nature of the tanks purpose, inspection is now required in many parts of the world to ensure compliance with safety regulations. And as such, non destructive testing is becoming more and more common place, even outside of traditional industries.

Within the more traditional industries such as power, energy, offshore, chemical process, bulk storage etc. inspection is already common place, with many industries already having discovered the many benefits of regular testing.

Tank condition and remaining life are the two immediately useful metrics following an inspection, allowing planning and any necessary repairs to take place.

As well as repairs, condition can signal other problems, such as mistakes in the process causing a slightly too high temperature or acidity which then corrodes the tank. Inspection is also useful for keeping a running record of tank condition, and through regular inspection, problems can be spotted as they happen, and accidents and potential down time avoided.

Tanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from steel through to plastic, and for each size, material, and setup there are several options available.

Ultrasonic testing is one of the main methods of inspecting the tank shell, allowing an easy and quick measurement of thickness to be taken.
